Like the rest of Italy Umbria has notably moved into the modern era of wine making. Although Sangiovese still represents the majority of plantings, Sagrantino is without doubt one of the most highly regarded and rarest grape varieties in Italy, regularly picking up the top accolades in local & international shows & press. As with the red grape Sagrantino, Grechetto is almost exclusively produced with great quality in this region. To accompany the selection of Umbrian dishes, I would like to showcase one of the leading producers in the region, Antonelli, situated in the hills of Montefalco. Salami course 2006 Grechetto dei Colli Martini DOC The mineral acidity of the 2006 Grechetto makes it the perfect accompaniment for the salami. The aromatics shows hints of white flowers, nectarine and green apple, which follows onto the palate with a touch of almond and mineral texture to finish. Pappardelle with braised rabbit, olives & Pecorino 2005 Montefalco Rosso DOC This medium bodied red wine is a blend of 65% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot. This wine shows vibrant forest berries & plum character on the nose and palate, with traditional tones of earth and spice. Traditional style slow cooked Pork 2003 Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG This powerfully structured wine is produced in one of the warmer vintages, which explains its abundance & depth of fruit character. Plums, morello cherry and red fruit jam fills the palate, finishing with a hint of spice, and great persistence. Baci di Perugia Chocoloate dessert 2003 Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito DOCG Created from sagrantino grapes which have been dried for up to 90 days this unique style, is a fine balance of dried forest fruits, slightly savoury spice, and bitter sweet chocolate. A perfect chocolate accompaniment. |
