SOMMELIER'S CHOICE
JULY/AUGUST
A journey through Italy
Sommelier’s Choice – each issue we highlight Italian wines, offering you the chance to sample some less-familiar varieties and producers.  This month I recommend:

2006 Terlaner Classico DOC, Cantina Terlan, Alto Adige
2004 Patrizi Barbaresco DOCG, Piemonte

2006 Terlaner Classico DOC, Cantina Terlan, Alto Adige
This white wine comes from the northern Italian region of Alto Adige. Cantina Terlan, from Terlano, produces a delightfully aromatic white, made from predominantly Pinot Bianco, which provides delicate aromatics on the nose and palate of white flowers and pear. Smaller percentages of Chardonnay and Sauvignon provide mouth fill and texture, finishing with enjoyable steely character.  This wine mades an ideal accompaniment with seafood, in particular crustations.

2004 Patrizi Barbaresco DOCG, Piemonte
If Barolo is considered the King of Italian Red wine, then Barbaresco is definitely the Queen.  From one of the most prestigious regions of Italy, Piemonte, a Barbaresco produced by Manfredi Patrizi from the very highly regarded vintage of 2004. This wine shows all the characters of elegant rose petals, cherries, cedar, earthiness and layered tannins that you would expect from a nebbiolo from this region, but at half the price you would expect. Extraordinary considering not only the difficulty in growing the grape,  how small the production and area is, but also that it has been in oak for 2 years, and a year in bottle before it’s released.  The perfect choice with red meat.
